All I want for Mother’s Day is…

Last minute lady

Okay honey (and kids)-listen up. Here’s what I want for Mother’s Day (maybe I speak for some other moms out there). You can go ahead and buy me the last minute drug store chocolate box, but if you really want to move the needle, you’ve got to pay attention to what would really make me happy.

1) Sleep. Leave me alone Sunday morning. Make that Saturday and Sunday. Don’t wake me up to tell me you are going downstairs. Don’t flush the toilet in our bathroom. Don’t scream right outside my door or open the shades. Just tiptoe out of the room, shush the kids and sneak downstairs until I decide to descend. You would get an even bigger gold star if you remember to shut the ringer off the phone in our room.
2) Don’t make me breakfast, but that coffee pot better be on. I will not immediately be ready for breakfast when I decide to join the rest of my family after my long hibernation. I will want coffee, extra strong, with a touch of cream. In fact, just make the pot when you hear my toes touch the floor but leave it for me to prepare my own cup.

3) Buy me flowers. I love fresh flowers and would love to see a beautiful bouquet of flowers or a few picked from our backyard in a vase in the kitchen.

4) Clean up. I don’t want to come downstairs to find a breakfast you made me and the dirty dishes for me to clean after I eat the breakfast. Pick up the toys, newspapers, etc so when I come down stairs, the living room and kitchen are spotless.

5) Read to the kids. I would love to come downstairs to find the kids reading with you rather than watching TV. That would just make me feel so happy. If they have some sports obligation, like t-ball, just take them and have a great time.

6) Walk the dog. Bring a plastic baggie.

7) Call my parents. Wish my mom Happy Mother’s Day and tell her I’ll call later.

8) Do a load of laundry. Don’t mix the colors with the whites.

9) Defrost something for dinner.

I know this all may sound like a lot and some of it may seem trivial, but our schedules are so busy that I am just exhausted all the time. The point is, I would just like to wake up and have absolutely nothing to do but be with you.

10) Okay and I’ll take that manicure too…

  2. Kathie Marie Says:

What i’d like on Mothers Days is just to be able to tell my mom one more time how much I love her. She died May 9th 06 just before Mothers Day

  3. Julia Says:

I completely agree with all of that! Can we get a message to all of the husbands out there!! All that I have expressed to him is that I for no reason whatsoever what to go to a buffett for brunch….on any day - let alone Mother’s Day. I know that his mom does not care either way but for goodness sake I do….who wants to eat at a buffett - YUCK!

  4. Sherry Says:

Well, now, just a minute. This sounds like what I do for my husband every weekend… am I stuck in 1950 or what?

I hope all you wrote comes true - especially the flowers and the kids reading with Dad parts!

  5. Vanessa Says:

oh my gosh! i am reading all the “all i want for mother’s day,” and last minute lady. wow. you are so right. we do it all. all the time. every day. and all we want is, have to do nothing, but be with them. (husband and kids) it is always something for us. i commend you all. i just feel under appreciated. i have four children and a child care and a husband. i want to wake up and not have to do nothing. especially pick up after myself! i wish you all a great mother’s day.

  6. Jovanka Says:

Very well put, u nailed it, how about add on a message or spa treatment right after you’re done hibernating and lets make sure when we come back home the kids are already tucked in bed so we can have a romantic night for two without interruptions. Cheers to you!

  7. Melissa from Texas Says:

What would be nice for a change; is for my husband to plan something for Mother’s Day instead of me telling him what I want (every Year). Breakfast in Bed would be nice, but not the mess afterwards! A day for me instead of what the kids want (as usual).

To all the Mother’s out there:

    Have a Wonderful Mother’s Day!

  8. Phyllis a Crow Says:

  9. Kirsten Says:

  10. Brandy Says:

Hi Rach! I hope I’m in the right place. I wanted to thank you for being you. I just turned 30 on 5/6 and have lived on my own for almost 10 years. I eat a lot of cereal. (ha ha) Until recently that is…I don’t like to cook..never have..I’ve always said that any pan is a no stick pan if you no cook in it! However…watching you, you make it look so easy. You have encouraged me to take a chance in the kitchen. I am by no means a chef quality…but I’m expanding my abilities almost daily. I was just printing a bunch of your recipes tonight, and one of them says to “carefully give the garlic a whack…” which I thought was hysterical. With directions that are easy to understand AND humorous, I will continue to practice in the kitchen. Sincerely, Brandy
