Did you know?

By Pet Lovers

That there are rescue sites for pretty much every breed of dog? Just because you want a pure breed dog does not mean you need to go to a breeder or a puppy mill. Do you want an American Fox Terrier? Start by “Googling” “American Fox Terrier Rescue” (or any breed you like) and you will find a site dedicated to placing or replacing dogs that have lost their homes-many because families have relocated or for some other reason are no longer able to care for their dogs. You can save a great deal of money and a dog’s life at the same time; give it a try!

As an example www.foxterrierrescue.net

I recently adopted a dog from a pit bull rescue. It has been the most rewarding decision I have made. Please check out the above website which is for a wonderful Pit Bull and Pit mix rescue organization. Many people in Ann Arbor have adopted from this rescue and have only good things to say.

I am a resident of Ohio. Ohio is proposing to ban Pit Bulls and “Pit Bull Dog Types” from the state. If you have a Pit Bull you have 90 days to euthanize it or move from the state. After that, the dog wardens will start seizing “Pit Bull Type Dogs” and euthanize them. “Pit Bull Type Dogs” would include mixed breeds and some AKC breeds like the American Staffordshire Terrier. Does anyone know of any Pit Bull organizations I could contact to help in this fight against the genocide of these wonderful dogs?

  5. Nancy Garcia Says:

I had a Pit Bull and when we heard that Texas is also making a law that Pit Bulls should be baned from Texas. It broke my heart, because my dog have a close bond. I love my dog and I don´t want to give it away. Besides he hasn´t even hurt anyone, and I know he will never hurt anyone. So please help me and other people not to loose their dogs. Thank you.

Well, I love boston terriers! And its a thing in our family where we never buy a dog that has been breed. We have two wonderful dogs, Brutus and Lucky. Brutus was rescued from the Boston Terrier Rescue of NC. He has so much energy! Then, there is LUCKY! We had recieved an Email from a friend and this long haired chiwawa/boston terrier (boston w/long hair) had been abandoned. The owners had their house forcosed on, packed their bags, and left. THe neighbor was a friend of the lady that had emailed us. We went and meet the dog and feel in LOVE! Her originial name was chewy…but we thought Lucky was more apropriet. Dogs are AMAZING! But I thinkg some people are scared to go to shelters an rescues. THe truth, a lot of the dogs are ok. ONe thing they told us with Brutus, they told us to try it with two weeks, after two weeks they called and asked if we wanted to keep him. So try and Go for that dog that needs a loving home that YOU can provide!

  7. Karyn Says:

I absolutely agree with getting your dog from a rescue. They are the sweetest animals you will ever own. But, please, please, before you get a dog make sure it fits in with your lifestyle. If you don’t have time for grooming and can’t afford a groomer, don’t get a dog with long hair. If you don’t have a yard and don’t have time to go to the park daily, please don’t get a dog that needs a lot of excercize. Research the breed and make sure your personality and lifestyle fits with the animal you are getting, otherwise you will both be miserable.

Rach, I have a Pitt Bull which I got from a young family just starting to have children. They got slightly afraid that “Ranger” would be a bit too agressive for a human baby. I will say, he is the first Pitt I have owned, and without a doubt, the most loving pet I have ever had. I congratulate you on your efforts to insure all animals are cared for. I also comment Ellen for her efforts too.

I would close by saying “bless you” but I feel you already are.

From one pittie mom to another: Please contact your local legislation regarding banning bully breeds!I was horrified to learn that Ohio intends to take family dogs from their homes and euthanize them in 10 days!
Please click on the site I have listed; It is a breakdown of the bill.
This site also has links to proper officials in Ohio. Please send emails/letters even if you do not live in Ohio- it could be your state next! Advocate spay and neuter laws, not the banning and euthanasia of a particular breed!
Rachael, please speak up for our furry family members who cannot speak for themselves! Your voice could mean a lot!

Rachel.. I am so thrilled to see your show on June 13 about the Michael Vick pupps. This has tore my heart to pieces since this whole sick ordeal has occurred. My husband encouraged me to get a Pit Bull for our family about 7 yrs. ago. They are the most loving animals I could ever know. Your show touched my heart and I am so thrilled to see that Johnnie and the others are doing so well. I would love to keep getting updates on the dogs. It tears my heart to pieces to hear and see the breed being so torn apart by people like Vick. Thank you Rachel I will only hope and pray that many people will see your show and help these wonderful dogs. Many hugs and kisses to you. And Isssy to.

I was watching the show about saving the pitbulls.I have a Jack Russel and where ever I am he is,so he was laying by my side and he heard you when you started crying.Needless to say he thought it was me,he jumped up and started licking my eyes to dry up my tears.I also have a mixed pit and Charpey dog,he is nothing but a big baby, his name is Romeo and the Jack Russel is Bubbyray.I do love my pets.I have always said don’t mess with my kuds,or grandchildren or my animals.I love them all.Love your shows keep up the great work.

  14. Charity Says:

We rescued a pit bull from a very overcrowded shelter. Judge is his name and we couldn’t be happier with him. Judge was close to being euthanized but luckily we arrived in time, he was almost 1 year old when we adopted him and he just turned 5 in March. He’s awesome, and my fiance has been wanting to get another pit bull puppy. We love pit bulls they are very loyal, good with our 4 children, sleep with us and Judge loves going for walks and car rides. He is such a big part of our family, that we even take him to grandma’s house to visit right along with the children. He knows she is grandma and always is excited to see her.

  15. sherry hull Says:

Rachael,I volunteered for Friends for Life Animal Rescue here in Humboldt Co.,CA for 3yrs and met more Pit Bulls in that time than I had ever met in my 50+ years. I want to say Pit Bulls are sweet, loving, gental, forgiving dogs. They are as sweet as any other dogs. It is not the dog that is violent it is the human who makes them that way. It is the human that is the violent being and make the dog that way or they die. Humans need to stop using dogs for their violent entertainment. The laws need to be stronger to stop this. HURRAY FOR THOSE WHO RESCUE PIT BULLS AND FIND THEM LOVING HOMES WHERE THE DOGS CAN LIVE THE LOVING LIVES THEY DESERVE.
CONGRATS TO YOU RACHAEL FOR BRINGING THIS TO YOUR VIEWERS. LETS HOPE THEY PASS THE WORD THAT PITS ARE GOOD DOGS NOT VIOLENT. LETS INCREASE THE PUNISHMENT FOR THOSE WHO TRAIN DOGS TO KILL.

  21. A.P. Says:

There is a beautiful “pit bull” type dog in need of a good home on the following website adarrescue.com. This organization is in Tuscaloosa, Al and it is wonderful.

  22. Jess Says:

Rachael- Imagine that someone can just come into your home and take your beloved pet away. Well thats exactly whats happening in ohio A horrible thing where Pitbulls are being banned and owners forced to surrender thier dogs or forced to pay a $500 fine or leave the state. How lawmakers could let this law pass is beyond my comprehension, I WILL NOT give my dog up to the dog warded to be destroyed. This law has already passed in other states as ignorance is trying to eliminate the pitbull breed. Anyone who has ever known a pitbull that was raised under the right conditions knows how loving and sweet the are. Please write to Ohios governor Ted Strickland and plead to not let this law pass, if it did all pitbulls will be taken and desroyed without owners being able to do anything about it

I watched your show where u had the rescued Micheal Vicks pitbull on. It brought tears to my eyes. Until three weeks ago I had a pitbull grandpuppy, she was almost five months old and wonderful, beautiful and I loved her to pieces. She certainly changed my mind about pits. Until one evening my daughter left her in their fenced back yard. My Nollie was poisoned by someone giving her rat poison. Had we known somebody did this we could have taken her right away to the vet. The way it was it was too late when we got her there. The inhumane cruel things people do because they are pitbulls. This pup. wonderful loving adorable living thing did not deserve to die this way because of the reputation of ignorant people. She suffered. She would have given nothing but love to anyone. I don’t understand.

  25. Theresa Says:

Saw the show on June 13 about the Michael Vick dogs. I sat there with tears in my eyes and then gave my pitbull boxer mix a big hug. She is one of 4 dogs that we currently have. Kalie arrived on our door step a few years ago. She was about 5 months old. Her face is pure pitbull, but they cropped her tail to make her look like a boxer. It was evident that she had been abused. She had a nasty gash on the top of her head, that should have been stiched closed. It did heal, but the scar turned thick and nasty, so we had it removed. She is the sweetest dog I have ever seen. She loves to cuddle and will give you a kiss in a heart beat. I just don’t understand how anyone could be mean to ANY animal. It makes me sick just to think about it.

I just heard about the new proposal in Ohio banning Pit Bulls. However, this law takes it a step further to say that the government/police have the right to come in your home and kill your dog on site.(simply because of the breed not because they actually did anything wrong) Its almost like a Pit Bull holocaust. I could not bare to part with my dog. Its sad that I actually fear her being seen sometimes at this point. Shes never hurt anyone. Shes the sweetest most gentle dog Ive ever had (and ive had lots). She means the world to me. I want to know how I could help to put a stop to the injustice and prejudice against these amazing animals. Something has to be done and every person can help to make a difference.

i am at a loss for words right now, pit are being banned cause of the bad ppl that own them, soon it will be anydog that hAs ever bit. How many of you have small dogs that has bit someone, are they gonna ban then next wats next banning of the lil dogs cause of a few bad ones i have herd they are gonna start with pits and go so forth with it to rotties and then dobermans and so on
DONT LET THE GOVERMENT RULE US,, THEY HOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TELL US WHAT DOGS TO HAVE AND HOW TO HAVE THEM, THERE JUST NEEDS TO BE STRICTER LAWS ON WHO CAN OWN THESE WONDERFUL DOGS AND KEEP EYE ON THEM, THE ONES THAT WILL COMPLIN BOUT MORE LAWS ON THEM RE THE ONES WANTING TO DO BAD WITH THEM

I adopted a pure breed Keeshond puppy from a local shelter about two years back to be sent to a rescue in Oregon, we were taking care of him because I was graduating from High School and leaving the day after with another pure breed Keeshond, after all that the puppy had gained his way to being kept and ultimately became my Graduation present, he now is 2 years old and an ultimate wimp but a real big love. Because of our works of saving the breed we were able to save 6 dogs, but unfortunately one had died of cancer recently.

  30. michelle watson Says:

i have a pitbull and an americain staffordshire terrier. I have made both of them Therapy dogs, they go to hospitals, schools, retirement manors etc. I fully believe that it’s the owner that makes a dog good or bad!! my am staff also is a titled agility dog. so those of you with these breeds we need to show the world by example how great these breeds are. There’s never been a news report about all the bully breeds doing therapy, search and rescue, etc how do we get such things on the news so we can show the world that there’s no bad dog breed only bad owners!!!!!!!!

  31. Mrs. Goodman Says:

My brother has a pitbull named Tank. Tank is the best dog anyone could ask for. He is not aggressive at all. I hate how this breed of dog is stereotyped. True, they have very strong jaw bones but the jaw bones won’t need to be used unless someone or something gives the dog a reason. Tank has never bit or snapped at anyone. He is very good around small children. I have 2 boxers and they are not bad but more rowdy and hyper then Tank. I think it is all about how a dog is raised. You can train/raise a beagle to be a mean dog.

  32. martha Says:

I have a young basset that I found at a rescue. I had lost 2 basset to cancer 8 and 6 months earlier and was ready to fill my home doggy drool again. I put in basset rescue and found a local one (if you call 150 miles local, which in Montana, is pretty local).I am so happy I have her. She is learning how to do agility and will soon learn tracking. I want her to do what she was bred for.
The one thing I wish is people would refer to the “pitbull terrier” as an American Staffordshire Terrier, which is what it really is. The “pitbull” is what people who fight them turn AST into.

  33. linda Says:

Today we are on our way to pick up our second Cocker Spaniel from a rescue organization. She was dumped at a shelter because she had a “cherry eye” which the shelter undertook to have surgically repaired. She is a senior (9 yrs old) and very very pretty. We are assured her temperament is sweet and are looking forward to having her in our own senior lives. Don’t dismiss an older dog; they have many attributes, not the least of which is they are usually housebroken! These rescue organizations make sure each of their adoptees gets a safe and loving home and charge a minimal fee which doesn’t begin to offset their own expenses. Give it a try.

  34. Katie Says:

Whatever breed you want, please don’t buy a dog! There are so many wonderful dogs being put down because they are homeless. Please visit friendsfurlifetn.org to find the perfect companion, protector and friend! I did, and our dog Misty is the most terrific family dog we could ask for!

  35. Elaine Says:

I have a sweet toy poodle we rescued from Heaven Can Wait in Las Vegas. Lucy is the best thing that ever happened to us. This may sound silly but, I believe a rescue knows when they are being saved and not only appreciate you but have much love for you.

The only reason to buy a dog is when you want to show it. So, please don’t buy a dog - Rescue saves animals lives.

By the way, I was looking for a puppy and now I’m grateful I didn’t get one. Lucy was fully trained and doesn’t chew my shoes.

Wolfgang Puck catering is ordering Homemade Doggy Dinners as are several newscasters. Rachael, you really do need to have these two girls on your show - they are also writting a cookbook for making your own homemade dog foods and treats - Amazing - dog approved as well as vet approved recipes.

  37. Wendy Says:

I have a 15 year old cocker spaniel. One year ago I was walking her on a leash in front of my condo. A pit bull with no collar and no leash ran across the parking lot and grabbed her whole head in his mouth. The lady with him strolled up and the dog looked at her for approval. He had by this time moved to my dog’s hips and dug in. This dog never snarled or growled and when the lady (who said she was not the owner) approached, he let go and ran off. After several hundred dollars in vet bills I was never able to locate the dog. I know that all dogs of a breed are not the same, but I have to admit that though this dog was not obviously vicious generally, he certainly gave my dog PTSD. It was heartbreaking to witness and be able to do nothing to help her. It made even me question the suitability of this breed around other less dominant breeds and children.

    Racheal,
I also rescued my pitt bull at 5 weeks old. We named her Sissy and trust me the name fits well. She is the smartest dog I have ever had and so very gentle. These animals have such bad reps due to ignorance of humans. I always say dogs will always be more loyal than any person will ever be and they deserve to be spoiled rotten like my Sissy.

  41. Debbie Says:

    Hi Rachel-
Thank you so much for raising awareness for pitbull adoptions. They are a truly special breed. My adopted pitbull Angus was a therapy dog and brought a lot of joy to others. All dog owners need to realize that breed bans can affect more than just pit bulls also.

Also, it is great that you spread the word that anyone searching for a purebred dog can find one! Petfinder.com is a great place to start.

  43. Eva Quiroz Says:

    Hi Rachael,
Well this is the first time I am actually doing a dog rescue and trying to find her a home. She was in line to be put down at a shelter, she was placed there by her adopted family…They had second thoughts and took her back, had her boarded her at a Vet. Hosp. where I was working at the time. I rescued her from there because she was being negalected terribly and so I brough her home. I don’t know the story entirely, but I do know “Kailie” (American Staffshire) is a great dog who certainly deserves a second chance in life. The only things I have found with Kailie is she has a ACL injury in her left hind leg and the fact that she is a pit, and she thinks cats are toys and I have 8 of them…therefore Kailie doesn’t make a good canidate for my house. I am desperately looking for a good home for her, she deserves it. Can Someone please help. I am in the meantime giving Kailie the best quality care possible. She is potty/poop trained and listens to basic commands, so I know someone invested some time into her. I just don’t know the entire story, I just know bits and pieces of it. Anyone who has any suggustions please help.
    Eva.

  44. Deb Hurlburt Says:

    Eva,
Having been in this situation a few times before, I will give some advise that has helped me to place dogs that have found there way to me. Walk her in places were a lot of people will be, parks, busy trails, downtown and even consider putting a vest on Kailie that reads “Adopt Me.” And get a great photo of her and carry it with you so you can show anyone and everyone; waitresses, cashiers, friends at work or where ever. Also contact local shelters, the three that are around my area will do “courtesy listings.” Also post flyers in vet’s offices. And there is also petfinder.com. Try to see if there is a local breed rescue. I know it is difficult but good luck to you both. I can also speak from experience when I say it is almost more rewarding to find the right dog the right situation than giving it to the dog yourself.

  45. Melanie Says:

Rescuing a pet is a wonderful thing both for the animal and for the person. These pets are in need of a loving home and they offer much love in return. I have three rescued Golden Retrievers and serve on the board of Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue (WWW.LIGRR.ORG). All breeds of dogs and cats have rescue groups assisting them. People wanting a pet should check the internet and help a pet. We should all offer assistance to pets needing homes and avoid pet stores.

  46. Netta Nolen Says:

I am so sorry to hear about the ban they are doing in Ohio. I can’t believe this is happening in the US. I do think there should be something done about people like Michael Vic and the people who have caused this to happen. I did not get to see the show on June 13th and now wish I had. I am keeping up with the dogs that Best Friends animal rescue took in and am amazed at the help they have given these dogs. I myself have 2 Jack Russels, a brother and sister named Judge Roy Bean and Lilly Langtree (Lilly and Jerb.) While working in my little town I helped rescue the Jack’s and you would be surprised at the number that I found and had neutered and spayed and gave away to good homes because people did not check out the nature of these very active dogs and decided they were to much to handle and got rid of or abused them. Makes me sick to think people can be so cruel to an animal that does nothing to them. Also don’t like it when they see easy money in a popular dog and start breeding them and selling them thinking they are good breeders when they are really back yard breeders. Enough said for one day. Thanks for listening to me.
