Keeping your pet safe on Halloween Posted by Pet Lovers on October 11, 2008 | 11 Comments

Halloween is fun for everyone in the family - but can be a nightmare for some pets. The doorbell ringing all night, lots of strangers coming to your door, potentially toxic treats that may be in reach of your pet. Here are some tips on keeping your pet safe this Halloween:

-Keep your pet in a safe place where he can be calm during all the activity of trick or treaters coming to your door. Some pets love to come to the door to greet the trick or treaters - others get anxious and bark or try to dart out the door. If you have a darter or barker, think ahead and put your pet in a safe place - his kennel, a bedroom, etc. - before the chaos begins.

-Make sure your pet’s tags are current and securely attached in the unfortunate event he slips out the door on this busy night.

-Keep candy out of your pet’s reach - both the candy for trick or treaters and your kids’ loot bags. If your dog does get into the chocolate - don’t panic. Call your vet and tell him the situation. It takes a lot of chocolate to hurt a pet and toxicity signs show within 12 hours.

-If you dress up your pet, make sure there isn’t anything around his neck or constricting any other area.

-If you take your dog out trick or treating with the kids (for calm dogs only!), be sure to keep him on a leash. Even if he is an off-leash trained dog, it’s the kids you have to worry about, so use a leash for this night only.

A safe Halloween is a happy Halloween for everyone - have fun!

Don’t forget country pets are in danger too. We have 6 dogs and 3 roam around outside all the time. Our property is fenced for safety but don’t forget some children like to temp and tease…be on the lookout for items thrown over fences. This is a good night to keep outside ‘family memebers’ inside or put up safely.

My 3 dogs LOVE Halloween. My husband and I sit on our front steps and the 3 of them sit right inside the door to watch. I have 3 bowls with me - (1) mixed up chocolates, etc.; (2) candies for the teenie weenies; (3) dog bones and treats. The response to my giving the doggie treats is AWESOME! The kids get such a kick out of it and the “mom & dads” love that I actually care about everyone in the family.

    Happy Halloween everyone!

Halloween is definitely a favorite in my home. But if you find your dog a little extra hyper or possibly scared, I recommend Sleepytime Tonic from happytails Canine Spa Line, it won’t knock your dog out cold but will calm them down enough to have you all enjoy the festivities.

Another way to show your pet you love him is to give him Liquid Zeolites. Being that they are outside most times, they breathe in more toxins than we do. So if we need to detox, wouldn’t they? For those animals having health challenges or getting up in age, you may want to review http://www.testimonyinfo.com to learn more on how other pet owners have experienced awesome results w/ improving their animals health challenge. Hope that helps someones’ baby.

I have a dog that has huge trust issues, I am planning on keeping her in her kennel which is in our living room.. the kitchen door is where we will have the trick or treaters come…

The advise put on this blog is wonderful and I hope people do think ahead about there own dog and respect the dogs fears if they have any…if you have dog that just loves people enjoy the night

One more thing to be very cautious regarding kids candy. XYLITOL - it’s a sweetner that is toxic to dogs. We almost lost our doberman to it. Dogs are really drawn to it. It’s in Orbit gum and I use to find my gum wrappers on the floor, he was taking the gum out of my purse!!!
