Color Blocking and Coffee Posted by Kelley Moore on November 17, 2008 | 7 Comments

I have slowly been making small changes to the decor in my home and this weekend was no exception. When I bought my house, eight years ago, I was a huge fan of French Country and so throughout the house there were accessories that reflected that passion. Because I am on a budget I have to get creative in how I make those changes, and so bit by bit I am finding inexpensive ways to add a more contemporary feel to the house. Most of the rooms are complete, and now I am finally in the kitchen. On the wall, I have had a vintage Brazilian door hanging on the wall above the coffee pot in the kitchen:

I knew the chicken had to go! In the adjoining breakfast nook I have chartruese green accents, so I decided to bring a bit of that to the kitchen. My cupboard space is limited and with the coffee pot on the counter below this wall I thought it would be a great space to store them. We started by using Frog Tape to create a rectangle, and then painted the rectangle green.

We picked up inexpensive brass hooks and created an antique affect by rubbing Jax in Pewter Black on each hook:

Once the hooks were ready we screwed them in to place in rows of three.

After the hooks were secure I placed my vibrant yellow coffee cups in a row adding one vintage cup. I love the vintage cup, it has the Queen on it and adds a bit of whimsy to the wall. The yellow pops off the green and also adds some cheer every morning!

The final product:

Easy, inexpensive, and it doesn’t take long at all to complete.

This is great idea and good use for left over paint. You and friend could swop paint if you want to do an accent block on already painted wall! You could do spoons instead of mugs or spiral shapes or if a kids room do ABC 123 etc great conversation starting and easily changed. Ok can you tell I am excited to try it!

Love the idea and it looks fabulous…. but I also love the vintage chicken… might it end up on Craig’s List?

Mary, it just might! If it doesn’t work in my mom’s home then I will let you know. Thanks for reading my post and leaving a comment. - Kelley

It really is such a great, creative, inexpensive idea. As a matter of fact I was watching HGTV a few weeks ago, designs to sell I think it was, and that’s one of the things they had done to the kitchen to make it more marketable but instead of mugs they used plates. You could really incorporate anything into that idea!
