Rodney Cutler

Let's just start out by saying Rodney Cutler cuts Rachael's hair. Nuff said. He also happens to be the very talented and cool owner of Cutler, a salon in New York City, and he is in the process of opening a new one in South Beach. Want to make an appointment at Cutler in NYC? Call 212-308-3838 Here's the full bio on Rodney: Rodney Cutler's hair styling career began at the young age of 16 when he was appointed to a four-year apprenticeship at Rifmik, one of Australia's leading hair salons. After much success in Australia, Rodney’s travels brought him to New York, and eventually lead to his employment at Bumble & Bumble Salon in 1992. At Bumble & Bumble, Rodney rapidly rose to be one of their top stylists and co-developed a program that integrated innovative hair cutting concepts, trained other staff members, and coordinated the teachers for the Assistant Hair Cutting Program - opening the doors of Bumble to many future professional stylists. In 2001, after three years of running a salon with partner Nick Arrojo, Rodney decided it was time to take one step further and open his own salon. In 2001, the first Cutler salon was born. Naturally, this led to another salon opening in 2005, this time in Soho. To go with the downtown, funky vibe, Rodney created the Soho location as a modern clean space with a loft-like, gallery feel, incorporating cut and color on one floor. A unique feature of the Cutler salons is the Redken Lab, where colorist and client interact for in-depth discussions about skin tone, color choices, fashion and much more. To extend the Cutler’s mantra of “Sexy Healthy Hair”, Cutler created a full line of shampoos and conditioners as well as styling products and a travel kit to help women maintain their looks at home. Rodney continues to grow his business with new endeavors, including a new salon in the Gansevoort South Hotel in Miami, scheduled to open in Summer 2008 along with many more innovative products to come. Rodney has been featured in top national and regional consumer publications and television programs such as the Today Show, Rachael Ray and InStyle magazine, among others. In his spare time, Rodney trains for and participates in Triathlon's Iron Man events and raises twin baby boys with his wife Linda.

Styling Tips

September 2nd, 2008

If you’re an “A list” celebrity no need to read any further. For everyone else who doesn’t have the luxury of having a personal hairdresser at their beck and call and intend on bravely styling their own hair, here are some simple helpful tips:

After washing your hair towel dry hair to remove excess water. What this means is less need for the hair dyer and less damage to your hair when you begin the blow-drying process.

Then apply Cutler’s protectant treatment spray before combing out your hair. De-tangle your hair by combing the ends working your way to the roots using a large-tooth comb.

When applying your styling product of choice, start with the underneath of your hair first and then comb through evenly.

To have more control, use a nozzle to direct the airflow of your blow dryer. Make sure the air is directed from the root to the ends this will reduce the amount of fly aways and static.

For maximum volume, create root lift by directing the air into the scalp while the hair is still damp. For extra fullness set your hair at the root using a small to medium round brush with attention at the roots. The bigger the round brush the straighter the result will be.

Finally, when you’ve finished your blow dry flip your hair and direct the hair through the underneath to give it that extra bouncy finish.

When applying a hair spray keep the can 6 inches away from your head so you don’t get product build up. This will also allow for even distribution. Note if you use too much hair spray it will actually weigh your hair down, so use sparingly.

So, there you have it, life can be easy with out your own personal celebrity hair dresser on speed dial… Blissful blow-drying at your finger tips!

Hair Straightening Solutions

August 26th, 2008

While we certainly love curly/wavy hair, there’s no shortage of women who desire that shiny straight hair. If you’re one of the many who feel like you have two left hands and are at war with your blow dryer daily, then these two options will make your life easier:

1) Japanese Straightening (Thermal Reconditioning):
The ultimate permanent straightening solution

It is a chemical process that changes the structure of the hair making it “TOTALLY” straight. It also removes all frizz giving the hair a sleeker look. This hair straightening process is not necessarily damaging. As a matter of fact, the hair texture is improved as it loosens the hairs’ protein bonds and reshapes the bonds into a straight pattern.

Attributes of this method:

• Permanent solution (the growing out phase can be difficult)
• Defrizzes
• Must be done two weeks after any sort of chemical service (hair color)
• Thio based relaxer
• Not suggested for heavily highlighted, bleached, or over processed hair

I am cautious to recommend this, as the straightening results are extremely permanent. But, I must say it is highly effective if this is the look you want to achieve.

2) Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy:

This is definitely our favorite of the relaxing processes as we have more control over the desired look.
It is a smoothing system that infuses keratin deep into the hair cuticle, which eliminates frizz and softens the curl.

The hair becomes more manageable and easier to maintain while greatly reducing daily styling time. Because the keratin bonds, encases the hair shaft it also protects hair from toxins and ultraviolet rays, which is a great color retention tool.

Attributes of this method:

• Semi permanent (3-4 months grow out phase is more natural)
• Defrizzes
• Softens Curl
• Can be done immediately following a chemical service (color)
• Adds keratin protein (what your hair and nails are made of) to strengthen and
• protect hair’s integrity.
• Safe for all color treated hair
• Repairs over processed hair

These are ABSOLUTE “must do” services at the salon- there’s nothing sexy about hair that’s snapped off at the roots. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a consultation for these straightening systems contact Joe Mullen, one of the best in the business at our downtown NYC SOHO Salon, located at:

Hair color 911…continued!

August 5th, 2008

Wow! Obviously color is a hot topic by the responses we’ve received.
So, clearly there are some “color 911″ questions that need to be addressed! Before we delve into them, I strongly recommend that the best way to achieve sexy healthy hair is to see a salon professional.

PROBLEM:  I made my hair too dark
SOLUTION:  Don’t panic!
Use dishwashing liquid (not dishwasher soap) to shampoo your hair as soon as possible after coloring. “The sooner the better”. You can shampoo a few times in a row depending on how dark with extreme darkness:  sleep overnight with baby oil on your hair and add oil to shampoo several times the next morning.  First add the shampoo to the oil and emulsify, before adding the water to lather. You must follow up with a deep conditioning treatment (I recommend REDKEN’S Extreme Rescue Force fortifying treatment) because after all the shampooing you’re hair will dry out from removing the color.
REMEMBER:  Don’t try to apply a lighter color thinking it will lighten the hair. Color on color just makes it darker.
NOTE:  When doing hair color at home, stay close to your natural color.

PROBLEM:  My blonde highlights are too brassy
SOLUTION:  To counteract brassy tones use a violet-based shampoo such as Shimmer Lights by Clairol or White Violet by Artec. Both have violet tones that will neutralize the warmth.  Follow up with REDKEN’S Pure Pearl conditioner, which also has a violet base while it deep conditions.
NOTE:  For maintenance alternate with a moisturizing shampoo.

PROBLEM:  My highlights are too white!
SOLUTION:  You need to add warmth. Today you find many “color shampoos” to warm the hair.  Look for “warm or gold tones” on the label. i.e. Sunflower by Artec.
This is when you need to go and see a professional for a glaze it’s inexpensive and not time consuming. Otherwise, look for a gold toned color enhancing shampoos and conditioners.
NOTE: For more warmth use “golden blonde”
For a more neutral tone use “beige blonde”

PROBLEM:  My hair is breaking off, (known as a chemical hair cut in our industry) from too many highlights and over coloring
SOLUTION:  Although hair can be cosmetically improved with the right products it’s critical to get a haircut to remove the damaged ends. Breakage means your hair has lost strength. Treating your hair with protein will strengthen and fortify your hair’s condition, as it needs to be rebuilt from the inside.  And for future prevention use the Cutler protectant treatment spray as a protective barrier and treatment solution.
NOTE: Some key ingredients to look for are; PROTEIN, CERAMIDES and NATURAL LIPIDS.
Protein penetrates deep into the core of the hair helping build internal strength.
Ceramides enter the cuticle layer to reinforce the structure and helps repair damaged areas.
Natural Lipids help resurface the hair leaving the cuticle shiny, smooth and protected.

PROBLEM:  I want to color my hair with henna
SOLUTION:  THINK ABOUT IT FIRST!!
Henna is a vibrant color that coats the hair thereby giving it lots of shine.  It even helps reduce dandruff.  True henna is natural however many product companies add other ingredients, which contain metallic salts.  This becomes a huge problem when it interacts with the ammonia activator in synthetic hair dyes. If you’ve colored your hair with such a type of henna and you had previously used chemical dyes or try to use them after henna, your hair could turn green. Removing henna is nearly impossible.
NOTE:  We absolutely insist on you seeing a professional! But, if you are stubborn and insistent on doing it yourself you can remove some of the coating by:

1.    Using 70% alcohol with sterile cotton pads to saturate the hair (avoid the scalp area).
2.    After 10 minutes, add a coat of mineral oil.
3.    Cover head with plastic cap.
4.    Heat with blow dryer for 30 to 40 minutes.
5.    To remove oil, apply clarifying shampoo to oil and pat with the oil before adding the water to lather.
6.    Shampoo several times.
7.    Deep condition.
8.    You won’t remove the henna entirely, but over time it will grow out.

Coloring those stubborn gray hairs!

July 28th, 2008

I thought I would help you out with the science behind removing those stubborn grays… And who better to help than my dear friend Patrick McIvor a REDKEN artist and owner of the Patrick McIvor Color Studio in Bethlehem, PA (610) 882-1081. Here are some of the best ways to cover or blend the gray away.

Semi-Permanent
This type of hair color is sometimes referred to as a vegetable color. It is the gentlest process to blend gray away. Semi-Permanent hair color is perfect for Blondes, Light Redheads or Brunettes that want a “highlighted” look to their hair. Your gray hair can look like natural highlights and it lasts up to 6-8 shampoos until it gently washes back to it’s natural gray.
Great for up to 25% gray.
Pros: Gentle, easy and easy to try.
Cons: Subtle in results, can’t lighten the hair.
Expertise: Easy

Demi-Permanent

Very similar to Semi-Permanent hair color with better coverage and wearablitiy. Not only does it blend but it also covers the gray and will last up to 6-8 weeks. These colors are always mixed with a processing solution that activates the color.
Great for up to 50% gray
Pros: Gentle, easy, lasts up to 6-8 weeks, can blend and cover gray.
Cons: Can give a subtle growth line, only lightens the hair slightly or not at all.
Expertise: Easy to Pro

Permanent
This is the solution when you want all the gray gone.  You have the option to lighten, darken or change the tone of your hair permanently. It’s always mixed with a developer. Because it is permanent, when looking to dramatically lighten your hair I suggest leaving it to the professionals.
Great for any percentage of gray.
Pro: Can make your hair lighter, darker, change the tone and cover your gray.
Con: Because it is permanent so are the mistakes.
Expertise: Easy to Pro

Highlights
Highlights have a great camouflaging effect on gray hair. Highlights can be created with highlift blonde haircolor or lighteners/bleach and there are advantages to both.  Highlift Blonde hair color is a gentler process on the hair and has more tone in the color. Lightens/bleach can give the hair a very light highlighting effect but can also damage the hair when used improperly. The beauty of highlighting is we can go lighter, darker, more natural or dimensional depending on your desired look.
Great to make up to 50% gray look like a fabulous blonde
Pros: Grows out gently, makes you blonde and less gray
Cons: Watch you don’t go to light or you can look like a powdered donut.
Expertise: Unless you want highlights that are barely there you might want to leave this to the pros.

So there you have it no more excuses for those stubborn grays!

Coloring your hair

July 22nd, 2008

Take it from Rach’s hair stylist, don’t color your hair without thinking it through!

Going Darker:

A dramatic look!
• Reddish golden browns are warmer tones that are going to be a softer transition.
• Flat dark color that is an ash tone can be very dramatic but be careful because it can wash you out.
• When going darker, we suggest a rich finish, which can be obtained if you request an all over color.
• And hey if you don’t like it you can always go back! (like Cameron)

Blondes:
• When going blonder, stay within two to three shades from your natural base
color.
• Once you become comfortable then you can go lighter.
• Start with a highlighting technique as it is a more natural approach and we can control the amount of color applied.
• Ash blondes works really well on light skin and light eyes the tones compliment each other.
• Golden blondes tend to be a lot warmer with highlighting use a variation of tones to avoid brassiness.
• If you have dark bronzy skin stick with caramel and butterscotch tones.

Reds:
There are several different shades of red the dilemma is picking the right one that works for you!

• Apple red - dramatic, theatrical, not natural… Don’t do it!
• Irish Setter or Ginger Red - The most natural looking red for pale skin when trying   to fool the world you don’t color your hair.
• Plum Red - On lighter skin it can look artificial but on darker skin, if done
right, it can look very luxurious.
• Mahogany - This is a brown red that works on darker skin to create a natural
look this is the most versatile red.

FYI remember to match your make up with your new look to your new look otherwise you will be spending a day at Ulta frantically searching the beauty aisles looking for a new make up kit.

Remember skin tones are everything when it comes to color. Work with your tones not against them. And if you want to be extreme in your color choice take note from the woman who changed her hair color and the world changed for her!  Marilyn Monroe

Although hair color changes come to mind after hard break ups, a messy divorces, or while PMS’ing try not to be impulsive, take a deep breath and wait two weeks. If at that point you desire a change who better to help you with your transformation than Emily Thomas, Rachael’s colorist and head of our NEW Miami South Beach salon.

Caring for your skin

July 15th, 2008

After we’ve done so many munchable goodies for our hair I thought why leave it at that? Let’s talk skin.  As we all know walking down those beauty aisles can be a confusing nightmare unless you have a degree from Harvard in cosmeceuticals. What’s on the back of the bottle is important- all that fancy jargon does mean something. Here are a few of our favorite ingredients to make your journey down that aisle easier. And remember price doesn’t always mean better!

An apple contains an alpha-hydroxy acid, which refines and rejuvenates the skin. It is best known for its moisturizing and anti-aging properties, which makes them perfect for dry or mature skin. Try Juice Beauty Green Apple Moisturizer SPF 15.

Melon extract is a great toner for the skin. It cleanses, cools, hydrates & firms the pores. It also contains Vitamin A, which benefits skin repair through increasing the rate of new cell formation. Vitamin C is also a valuable property that acts as an anti-oxidant with wonderful proteins for smoother, softer skin. Try Humphreys Pharmacal Inc Witch Hazel Redness Reducing Facial Toner Cucumber & Melon.

Cucumbers are a delightful beauty secret for the skin. They nourish the skin and have astringent properties. Cucumbers have cooling, soothing hydrating and hydrating. Cucumbers have the same pH as the skin so they help to restore the skin’s protective and natural acid mantle Repechage Hydra Refine Cleansing Mousse washes deep down, and helps eliminate pore-clogging oil.

Papaya is excellent in stabilizing oily skin & working as an exfoliant on dry areas. It is also used in skin products for the purpose of rejuvenating the skin. Papaya contains Vitamin A, a property that benefits skin repair through increasing the rate of new cell formation. Vitamin C is also an anti-oxidant with wonderful proteins for smoother and softer skin. Pineapple another excellent fruit with softening properties and heals the skin while fighting free radials. Try Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub. This unique scrub and natural exfoliator is suitable for all skin types and utilizes small pieces of actual pineapple and papaya fruit as well as finely ground scrub grains to exfoliate the skin gently and naturally.

Pumpkin is a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants that can help your skin achieve a healthy glow throughout the season! From facial treatments and moisturizers, to invigorating body treatments and wraps, pumpkin and pumpkin extracts can be used in a variety of spa treatments. Control Pumpkin exfoliating peel: is a gentle peel that softens the stratum corneum (outer most layer of the epidermis) while eliminating impurities and dead skin cells. Ideal for all skin types but especially suited for sensitive or irritated skin.

Oatmeal has soothing and calming properties great for masks. It is also used as an anti itching remedy. Try Freeman, Beautiful Skin Avocado & Oatmeal Purifying Clay Masque found at your local convenient store. This rich, creamy clay masque with avocado and oatmeal extracts purges clogged pores and draws out excess oils and dirt. Your skin is left feeling soft and most importantly clean.

Grape seed extract works as an oxygen quenchers, free radical scavengers, peroxide decomposers and enzyme inhibitors. Zinc, Iron, and calcium are found in high levels and they contain more antioxidizing properties than in any other fruit. Keyano’s Champagne Foaming Gel cleanser fused with grape seed extract, avocado and green tea is a delightful treat that will buzz your skin.

Seaweed is rehydrating, rebalancing, nourishing, cell regenerating, detoxifying, purifying, and oxygenating.  Seaweed penetrates the skin easily and makes it soft, supple, smooth and firm. Feed Your Hair!

July 7th, 2008

Seeing as I’m surrounded by food experts I thought I’d pay homage and share with you the health benefits of what we consume and how it affects us on the outside as opposed to in. We’ve seen an integration of our shopping carts fused into our shampoo bottles. These days our hair care products are chock full of vitamins, minerals, nutrients, natural fruit extracts and botanicals. Fruits have a tremendous amount of antioxidants, they are a rich source of vitamins and they have moisturizing, healing and protective qualities. These ingredients in our hair care products may sound so enticing one might think they’re at Jamba juice but remember… these products are NOT edible!

The Guava fruit is very rich in Vitamin’s A, B and C. It is a source of natural fiber and ideal for hair care. Try Aussie’s Tizz No Frizz gel (buy here: Aussie Sydney Smooth Styling Tizz No Frizz Gel Tube , 7-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 4)), which gives frizz its walking papers! Coming from this Aussie, Australian guava is a wonderful source of moisture, shine and frizz control.

Just down the road, the kiwi fruit, another fruit rich in vitamins, contains a large amount of vitamin C and E. Kiwis hold incredible conditioning properties which are ideal for hair. The natural extract of vitamin E is rejuvenating & protective against hair color fade & damage. Try Artec’s Kiwi Colorflector (buy here:L’Oreal Artec Kiwi Coloreflector Shampoo and Conditioner Liter set (32 oz Each Bottle)) conditioner.

Avocado oil is extremely moisturizing and contains penetrating properties perfect for Cutler’s Protectant Treatment Spray (buy here: Cutler Protectant Treatment Spray). Protecting our hair’s integrity against the traumas of heat styling. Cutler’s definition cream (buy here: Cutler Definition Cream for Texture and Shine) saturated with avocado oil adds texture and shine while retaining the beneficial moisturizing properties of the avocado.

My wife took her love for a dirty martini one step further by adding olive oil into her shower regimen. Try Federic Fekkai’s Glossing Shampoo formulated with naturally derived olive oil extract revitalizing dull hair. I recommend this product for clients with very dry or curly hair.

Grapefruit plays a part in Redken’s Blonde Glam, a huge success in our salon. Keeping our blonde beauties from chlorine build up is no easy task while making a splash during the summer months. The grapefruit keeps color clarity and reinforces strength while adding dimensional shine a perfect solution to keeping our blondes bright and bodacious instead of murky and dull.
These are just a few examples of many hair products out there. And just so you can be on the look out for other natural products here are a few more beneficial edible ingredients: Hawaiian white ginger, chamomile, watercress, pineapple, pomegranate, grape seed and prunes. An arsenal of natural ingredients that is key in maintaining moisture, balance, shine and the integrity of our hair. Remember the next time you’re in the grocery store don’t just look at the ingredients for tonight’s dinner check out what’s on the hair menu!

Rodney answers your questions

July 1st, 2008

Rhonda Tidmore Says:

I am so glad to get a chance to ask Rodney Cutler a hair question. I have long, course, thick hair. I have never been able to find the perfect style for my type of hair or my face. I have tried short, long and all the in between. Nothing is ever right. I occasionally perm and color also. If you ever want the challenge of your career Mr. Cutler and if Rachael would ever do a segment on hair disasters, let me send you pics of my hair and see if you can give me a hair style that works. Help! Sincerely, Rhonda

Rodney responds:
Rhonda, my recommendation is to actually work and try to bring out the natural texture in your hair. If your hair is long, try adding some layers and more moisture. Use curl enhancing styling products like Cutler Curling Cream. Also, I would use a medium to large size curling iron and gently wrap 1 – 2 inch sections around the outside of the iron to create a defined curl. If you don’t want to use a curling iron wrap 1 – 2 inch sections around your finger and let dry naturally. It’s easy and you will find your hair will look healthier and shiny with more style. Good Luck! Let me know how it goes.

Johnette Boone Says:

I need help with my hair!!!!!!!!! I am 43 and have type 2 diabetes. My hair is very oily! I mean very, very oily! I can wash my hair in the morning and by supper time it is oily. Is it because of my diabetes or the meds or can it be what I’m eating or the kinda shampoo I use. I have tried salon types of shampoos as well as Suave so, what do I do? I can perm my hair and the oil will go wavy for about 3 to 5 months, then it will be oily again. I really hate my hair and dont know what to do!

Rodney responds:
The Research and Development team at Redken were kind of enough to help us with this one. Some shampoos may leave polymers or silicones on the hair which may make the hair slippery but not “oily” or “greasy”. By putting curl in the hair with a perm, it stops the “wicking” of oil along the fiber (spreading).
Without getting too medical, (we will leave that to the doctors) and we’ll stick to the cosmetics. Using Redken Cleansing Shampoo, concentrate on the scalp by massaging in a circular motion using the balls of your fingers to extract the oils. In the middle of the day if it starts to get oily use a spray powder shampoo like Bumble and Bumbles Hair Powder at the roots to have a pick-up which should clean the hair and absorb any oil flow.

Elizabeth Says:

I think I need my hair short but I’m not sure. Everyone says it looks good short but I like it long- any ideas?… Oh, and my face shape is a heart. Please help me!

Rodney responds:
Ultimately you need to have a style you feel great about. If you don’t feel comfortable with short hair you shouldn’t cut it. There are ways you can incorporate a strong, short silhouette with length in the inside so you feel great and it suits your face shape. Remember with a heart shape don’t taper it too short around your neck.

Susan Says:

I don’t know what to do- I want my hair short but wherever I go, everyone says, “your hair looks so good long,” but I just feel like it’s dragging down my face. Also, what shampoo do you recommend because right now I use Fructis or something and it just seems so stringy. Do you know what to do?

Rodney responds:
There are ways to retain length but not have it look like it’s dragging your face down. If you had layers starting around the cheek bone it will accentuate them, open up your face and bring out your eyes. We believe sexy hair is healthy hair. So if your hair is color-treated hair try Cutler Extra Gentle Shampoo or Redken Color Extend. If it is not colored, use Cutler Daily Shampoo which will help add a bit of bounce to it.

Salon Tips

July 1st, 2008

If you didn’t catch the segment “how to get the perfect haircut” here are some great tips. And, if you did catch it there’s no harm in becoming an expert.
First of all, finding a hairdresser is not easy! The best way is to find someone on the street whose hair you love, and ask them where they get it done. Everyone loves to recommend their hairdresser and proof is in the pudding. When you arrive at the salon, here are some tips:

• Don’t arrive with a baseball cap on – no hat hair.
• Bring the hair that you wear every day so we can see your styling capabilities. We want to create a look that we know you can handle when you take it home.
• Be upfront in the beginning about how much time and money you are willing to invest. You should know what the commitment is to maintain the look.
• Always absolutely insist on having a consultation before you get shampooed so the hairdresser can see your natural texture. Wet hair all looks the same… and assuming you don’t walk around with wet hair all day we want to see what your hair looks like in its natural habitat.
• Try to be descriptive with your language and don’t use technical jargon. This will help us understand the feeling of the work you are looking for. Use words like movement, texture, softness, sweeping bangs… all phrases we can understand.
• Don’t forget… we love a good picture!
• An afternoon spent at the salon is not cheap. Make your hairdresser earn it and push for suggestions.
• Don’t cross your legs when you are sitting in the chair. Trust me if you do, the next day you will be wondering why your hair is crooked.
• As much as we hairdressers think we are perfect… we’re not and don’t always get it right. If you don’t like the cut, speak up while you are there. It gives us the opportunity to fix it and we want to make you happy.
